Whether the content is absorb through newspapers, magazines, television, books or online, people throughout the world are hungry for information. Information is the thing that keeps people connected to the world around them. The job of a good Journalist is to provide this information on a factual and unbiased basis.

Advancements in technology has made the job of Journalists a little easier, but it has also created a shortage of qualified individuals to disseminate information. It is the responsibility of the best Journalism schools in the US. to train the next generation’s writers, authors and news personalities.

Most top Journalism schools are accredited by The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC). According to NewsPro’s Survey of Journalism Schools, here is the top 10 Journalism schools in America.

U of M is a public university located in Columbia. The school was established in 1839. The university’s School of Journalism offers a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with concentration in areas such as news, radio, magazine and strategic communication.

Course requirements lean heavily on Liberal Arts classes and core Journalism classes including Ethics in Journalism. The Master’s program is designed to provide students with hands on training. This research and managerial based training is provided at the school’s Web based newspaper and weekly city magazine. The PhD program is designed to prepare students for a career in strategic communications. Annual Tuition: $9,430(resident), $22,822 (non-resident)

2. Northwestern University

Northwestern is one of the top private research schools in the country. The campus is located in Evanston, Illinois and was established in 1851. The Medill School of Journalism offers a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. The school believes writers need to be well rounded individuals. Therefore, a large percentage of the curriculum falls outside of Journalism.

The core curriculum focuses on different styles of writing and Ethics. The school also requires students to spend one quarter working abroad with a foreign news organization. The Master’s program offers concentration in magazine writing, news reporting and publishing. Master’s candidates may also receive experience working in Medill’s Chicago or DC based newsrooms. Annual Tuition: $39,675

3. University of Georgia

This school is a public university residing in the city of Athens. The school was founded in 1785. At Georgia, the Journalism and Communications departments are administered by Grady College. The Department of Journalism offers a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. The program focuses on preparing students to work as publishers, communications directors and top level news reporters.

Course studies include Liberal Arts classes, writing classes and core classes with concentration on newspaper, magazine or visual Journalism. The Master of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication (M.A.) offers several areas of concentration including the “4+1 Advertising-Public Relations Professional” program. Annual Tuition: $8,258 (resident), $27,562 (non-resident)

4. Syracuse University

As one of the East coast’s best Journalism schools, this private university in located in Syracuse, New York. The school was established in 1870. The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications offers Bachelor’s degrees in three different majors for Journalists; Broadcast and Digital Journalism, Newspaper and Online Journalism, and Magazine.

The curriculum includes writing courses like storytelling, editing classes, news reporting and a generous selection of electives. Students will also receive hands on training at some of the schools media outlets. The Master’s program offers several different concentrations for Journalism students. Annual Tuition: $40,380

5. Ohio University

OU is a public research school located in Athens. The school was founded in 1804 making it one of the oldest higher learning institutions in the state. The E. W. Scripps School of Journalism has produced 13 Pulitzer Prize winners through the years. They offer two Bachelor’s degrees in Journalism, News & Information and Strategic Communication.

The curriculum concentrates on the Liberal Arts, writing styles, Ethics and hands on experience with one of the school’s many publications and media departments. The Master’s program offers concentration options in news reporting or visual media. Annual Tuition: $10,484 (resident), $19,448 (non-resident)

Florida’s public university campus is located in the city of Gainesville. The school was established in 1853. Florida’s College of Journalism and Communication is home to the Department of Journalism. The department offers students a chance to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism.

Course studies include Liberal Arts classes, writing classes, classes in reporting and hands on experience working for live media publications such as the The Independent Florida Alligator. The Master of Arts in Mass Communication – Journalism is a two-year program that focuses on non-broadcast Journalism. Annual Tuition: $6,630 (resident), $28,908 (non-resident)

Montana’s public university campus is located in the city of Missoula. The school was chartered in 1893. Montana’s School of Journalism offers a Bachelor of Art in Journalism. Students are required to take several Liberal Arts classes, writing courses with media concentrations, editing and visual media classes.

Every student must complete a mandatory internship at a school-approved media outlet. There are several local, state and national outlets from which students can choose. The Master of Arts in Journalism program requires 36 hours of which 12 must be devoted to natural resource or environmental classes. Annual Tuition: $6,350 (resident), $23,127 (non-resident)

8. Lyndon State College

This public liberal arts college is located in Lyndonville, Vermont and was founded in 1911. As part of their effort to focus on cutting edge technology, Lyndon offers a very unique Bachelor of Science in Electronic Journalism Arts. The program is designed to train students on reporting and writing using many of today’s electronic media options like visual and online mediums.

Students are introduced to the real world of Journalism with hands on training at the Vermont Center for Community Journalism. The school currently is void of an accredited Master’s program. Annual Tuition: $9,696 (resident), $20,760 (non-resident)

9. University of Maryland

Maryland is a public school located in College Park. The school was established back in 1856. The Journalism Department is part of The Philip Merrill College of Journalism. They offer a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. The program requires two-thirds of the course work to be completed in Liberal Arts and the other third taking core writing and reporting classes. Students are required to work in media outlets such as the Capital News Service and the American Journalism Review.

The advanced degree offerings include a Master of Journalism (non-thesis), Master of Arts degree (thesis) and a PhD. For the Master’s, students choose from three concentrations; Multi-Platform Journalism, Broadcast News and Returning Journalist. Annual Tuition: $9,162 (resident), $28,348 (non-resident)

10. Indiana University

Indiana is one of the oldest schools in the state. This public school’s campus is located in Bloomington. The school was founded in 1820. The School of Journalism has long been a top rated program. They offer a BA in Journalism. For sports fans, they also offer the same degree with a sports reporting concentration.

The curriculum combines the Liberal Arts with news reporting, news research, writing, editing and Ethics. Students are also required to work on university publications or at university media outlets. The school also offers a Master’s and PhD program. Only 5-6 students are accepted into the Doctorate on an annual basis. Annual Tuition: $10,208 (resident), $32,350 (non-resident).
